About THA

The vision of the Founder and Executive Director, Elsie Urueta Pollock, is to provide a high quality education where ALL scholars are prepared to go to and graduate from college. Guided by this vision and commitment to the East Tulsa community, Mrs. Urueta Pollock submitted a charter school application designed to accomplish that. On September 2, 2014, the Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) school board voted to approve the THA Charter School.  

On August 4, 2015, Tulsa Honor Academy Charter School opened its doors for the first time to our founding class of Nerdy Knights. Our mission is to equip all scholars with the academic skills, content knowledge, and ethical character required for college graduation and success.  Through the hard work of the dedicated THA staff, scholars, and families, THA has grown, both in size and in academic achievement, to become a top middle school in Oklahoma and the top charter school in Tulsa. Based in East Tulsa, THA’s scholars are selected randomly each year during the lottery process due to the limited number of seats we have available. In the fall of 2018, the THA Middle School reached full enrollment, growing from serving 92 scholars in grade 5 in Year 1, to serving more than 400 scholars in grades 5 through 8 at full enrollment. The growth did not stop there, however.

Given family demand, THA applied for an expansion to the charter school so that we could continue serving scholars through grade 12. We submitted the expansion and the TPS School Board approved it on December 3, 2018. On August 6, 2019, THA opened its doors to the first class of THA freshmen.

Today, Tulsa Honor Academy Charter School serves more than 880 scholars in grades 5-11. THA has implemented a slow growth model, which allows a grade level to be added each year as scholars continue their Middle School and High School educations. THA will offer grades 5 through 12 in the 2022-2023 school year.

What is a charter school?

Charter schools are independently-operated public schools that have the freedom to design classrooms that meet their students’ needs. All charter schools operate under a contract with a charter school authorizer or sponsor – usually a nonprofit organization, government agency, or university – that holds them accountable to the high standards outlined in their “charter.” In the state of Oklahoma, charter schools can be authorized by the following entities: a local school district or technology center, a comprehensive or regional institution that is a member of The Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, a federally recognized tribe, or the State Board of Education. Tulsa Honor Academy is authorized via the local district, Tulsa Public Schools.

Charter schools are exempt from local operations and management regulations since charters must create their own operations and management guidelines. This management shift makes it so that charter schools can have greater flexibility in school design, ensuring they meet the needs of their scholars. Thus, while charter schools have more autonomy, they exchange that for greater accountability.

However, charter schools must adhere to state and federal regulations related to all public schools — for example, charter schools cannot charge tuition or be affiliated with a religious institution. Charter schools must take all the state and federal assessments and must serve all scholars, including scholars with special needs.

The reasons that parents choose charter schools for their children are just as unique as the students themselves. They choose charter schools because of the strong, dedicated teachers, because the school's focus matches their child’s needs, or simply because their child was struggling in their assigned public school and needed to try something new. Charter schools provide families with options in public education, allowing parents to take a more active role in their child’s education.

Our Vision

At Tulsa Honor Academy, our vision is to develop successful college graduates who will become well-rounded, engaged individuals and who will transform their communities. Tulsa Honor Academy ensures that 100% of scholars are on a path to go to and graduate from a college of their choice, beginning in the fifth grade.  We believe all children, regardless of race, background, or income, can achieve at high levels. Through a structured, disciplined, and academically rigorous environment, our scholars will be prepared to live a life of excellence, independence, and purpose. We will prepare our scholars to succeed in college and beyond by urgently pursuing rigorous academic goals, exposing them to life’s opportunities, and laying the foundation for strong, ethical character.

At Tulsa Honor Academy, we believe that through a rigorous academic design and a strong character development program, our scholars can achieve excellence.

Further, we believe that:

  • all scholars can achieve at the highest levels;
  • all scholars can achieve in a highly structured, rigorous, joyful school environment; and
  • all scholars can achieve when given appropriate supports.

How we get there

Tulsa Honor Academy will accomplish our mission and vision through seven core principles:

  1. Highly Structured Environment: We will provide an environment that is strict and warm. A disciplined environment will provide the structure through which scholars will be able to focus on their academics, foster a sense of pride in their school and their work, and be inspired towards an ambitious future.
  2. Academic Rigor: A strong academic curriculum with a focus on literacy and math is key to a college preparatory school. We will develop standards-based curriculum aligned with state and national standards that meets scholar where they are and pushes them to meet and exceed grade level expectations.
  3. Character Development: A strong ethical character is necessary for success in college and life, and character traits that underpin school success are shown to be particularly important for scholars growing up in economic challenge.  To support our scholars’ growth and achievement, we will establish a character development program founded on the core values of Courage, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Determination, Integrity, and Team.
  4. Well Trained, Mission-Driven Teachers: Rigorous curriculum and meticulous systems and procedures are irrelevant without strong teachers to execute on them. We will hire and train teachers of the highest caliber — hardworking, intelligent individuals who will execute on our vision as members of a mission-driven team. Teachers will have twenty days of annual summer professional development (PD), 2.5 hours of weekly PD, and six data days throughout the year to reflect on achievement data as well as plan instructional lessons and scholar supports.
  5. Strategic Use of Data: Data will be used daily and weekly to ensure scholar achievement. Trimester-based assessments will measure progress towards annual absolute and growth goals. Scholars and their advisors will set and track daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals to measure progress.
  6. More Instructional Hours: We will have an extended school day, providing an additional 1.75 hours of instruction as compared to the schedule of a traditional school day, and we will provide an extended annual calendar (181 days) for 12 additional instructional days.
  7. Parent Involvement: We will maintain pro-active and consistent communication with families though annual home visits for all new families and orientations for all families, weekly progress reports that outline academics and values-based character, monthly Parent University Nights, and trimester Report Cards and teacher meetings.
