Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar

Tulsa Honor Academy 8th grader, Melanie Mireles, was selected as a Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar. This program is a highly selective, pre-college scholarship for ambitious middle school scholars. This year, JKCF received over 700 applicants nationwide, which was then narrowed down to 236 semifinalists. From this pool of semifinalists, 50 new Young Scholars were selected. Selection criteria is competitive with a focus on academic achievement, leadership and persistence.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation provides each Young Scholar with educational advisers "to maximize high school experiences and to go on to thrive at the nation’s top-performing colleges." 

Beginning in 8th grade, the Young Scholars Program includes:

  • "Engaging in four-year planning and goal-setting."
  • "Funding for academic and extracurricular opportunities, such as music and art lessons, supplemental academic classes and technology."
  • "Annual summer programs"
  • "Year-round Young Scholars community programming."
  • "Networking opportunities with a high-achieving peer community."
